Why Global Investors Keep Betting Bigger on African Tech Hubs

A young, fast-growing population is turning several African cities into significant technology and startup hubs, drawing venture investment that once concentrated almost exclusively in Europe and North America.

Several African cities have emerged as significant hubs for technology startups and venture investment.

A number of African cities have emerged as genuine technology and startup hubs over the past decade, attracting venture capital investment that has grown substantially even as global venture funding overall has cooled from its earlier peak, a divergence that reflects investors’ interest in a young, rapidly growing consumer population still underserved by existing digital financial and commerce infrastructure.

Mobile-first financial technology has been a particularly strong area of growth, building on the continent’s early and widespread adoption of mobile money services that in many markets leapfrogged traditional banking infrastructure entirely, giving startups building on that foundation direct access to a large base of existing mobile payment users.

Funding remains concentrated in a handful of markets

Despite the continent-wide growth narrative, venture funding remains heavily concentrated in a small number of leading markets, leaving founders in many other countries with considerably less access to the capital and infrastructure that startups in the most funded hubs increasingly take for granted.

“The continent-wide growth story is real. It’s also true that most of the actual capital is still landing in the same handful of cities.”

With investor interest continuing to grow and a young population expected to keep expanding the continent’s base of potential digital consumers for decades, the sector’s overall trajectory remains strongly positive, even as the concentration of funding in a small number of hub cities remains an ongoing point of concern for founders elsewhere.
